Curious About an Ayahuasca Retreat in Peru? What to Know Before You Decide

An Ayahuasca retreat in Peru creates time to step away from daily routines, experience a guided ceremony in the Andes, and reflect on what matters to you. At Peru Shamans, we bring together Ayahuasca ceremony, personalised guidance, and the spiritual setting of the Cusco region.

If Ayahuasca feels unfamiliar, understanding the ceremony, its traditions, and its preparation is a good place to begin.

What Is Ayahuasca, and Why Do People Seek It?

Ayahuasca is a psychoactive brew with roots in Amazonian traditions. It commonly combines the Banisteriopsis caapi vine with chacruna leaves, which contain DMT. “Psychoactive” means it changes how you perceive, think, and feel.

A Tradition of Working With Plant Medicine

Within the spiritual approach we share, Ayahuasca is a teacher. You may hear practitioners call it “Grandmother,” expressing their relationship with the plant and its place in their spiritual practice.

The term “Ayahuasca spirit in New York” belongs to this understanding. It describes a belief and a way of relating to the experience, rather than something every participant must feel or believe.

Space for Personal Reflection

People approach Ayahuasca with questions about their direction, relationships, or patterns in their lives. Others feel curious about the tradition itself.

You can begin with a simple intention, such as wanting to understand what deserves more attention in your life. An intention gives your reflection a focus while leaving room for an experience you cannot fully predict.

Why Choose Peru for an Ayahuasca Retreat?

Our retreats take place in the Andes, in the Cusco region of Peru. Here, the mountain setting forms the backdrop to programmes that bring together ceremonial practice, personal reflection, and time in nature.

At Peru Shamans, our community includes Amazonian Ayahuasca practitioners and Andean spiritual guides.

Learn From the People Behind the Ceremony

Our community of shamans and spiritual guides includes Ayahuasca practitioners we refer to as Onayas and Andean practitioners known as Paqos.

Our Andean setting and Ayahuasca’s Amazonian roots describe different parts of the experience: where you attend and where the practice comes from. Andean ceremonies have their own traditions, which we also share through selected programmes.

Make Time for the Setting and the Experience

For travellers considering an Ayahuasca ceremony in Peru from Florida, or exploring plant medicine retreats in Peru from New York, the journey involves more than choosing a ceremony date.

Allow time to arrive, settle in, and understand your programme. Confirm the retreat’s exact location before arranging flights and accommodation, then leave breathing room around the experience.

What Happens During an Ayahuasca Ceremony?

Our programs bring together preparation, a guided ceremony, and conversation afterward. The format depends on the retreat you choose, but these stages explain what the experience can involve.

Before: Meet Your Guide and Share Your Intention

Our one-day programme begins with a meeting with the shaman, explanations, and preparation. It also includes time for meditation in nature.

Use this conversation to share your intention and anything that feels unfamiliar. You might want to know how the ceremony unfolds, how to request assistance, or how translation works.

During: Experience the Ceremony With Guidance

The shaman leads the ceremonial work and sings songs known as icaros. Our one-day programme includes individual ceremonial singing and an experienced facilitator/translator.

We describe the ceremony itself as lasting around four to five hours. During that time, participants may notice imagery, memories, strong emotions, or changes in their sense of time. Experiences vary, so there is no particular vision or feeling you need to achieve. 1

After: Talk Through Your Experience

Our one-day programme includes a conversation with the shaman afterward. This gives you an opportunity to describe what stood out, ask questions, and begin reflecting.

You do not need to explain everything immediately. Some impressions may feel clear; others may take longer to understand.

How Can You Prepare for the Experience?

Preparation gives you time to understand the ceremony, discuss your health, and arrive with realistic expectations.

Begin With a Health Review

At Peru Shamans, we request health information before confirming a reservation. Our safety programme includes nursing support and first-aid arrangements.

Share your medications, supplements, and relevant physical and mental health history. Certain medicines, including some antidepressants, can interact dangerously with Ayahuasca. Pregnancy, heart conditions, and a personal history of psychosis or bipolar disorder can make participation unsuitable. Discuss your circumstances with a qualified clinician as well as the retreat team.

Keep taking prescribed medication unless your prescribing clinician advises otherwise. Ayahuasca is a spiritual practice, not a replacement for necessary medical or mental health treatment.

Know How to Ask for Support

Ayahuasca can bring intense emotions and physical effects such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea.

Ask who will assist you, how they respond to distress, and how they arrange medical care when needed. Tell the team if you feel unwell; you do not need to interpret discomfort as spiritual progress.

Arrive With Curiosity

Read your programme’s preparation guidance and raise questions early. Give yourself permission to feel interested, uncertain, or both. Participation should remain your choice.

Which Retreat Format Fits Your Visit?

Choose a retreat by looking at its full schedule, the guidance available, and the time you can give to preparation and reflection.

Personal Attention and Group Size

We favour personalised ceremonies with no more than four participants.

If you live in Washington and are considering a shaman-led spiritual Ayahuasca retreat, explore our programmes in Peru with these practical details in mind.

Compare What Each Programme Includes

Our Ayahuasca retreats include different lengths and combinations of activities.

Programme detail What to clarify
Ceremonies and activities Which practices feature, and who leads each one?
Preparation and reflection When can you speak with the shaman?
Travel and accommodation Which transfers, meals, and nights does the price include?
Ongoing support Who can you contact after departure, and at what cost?

More ceremonies do not automatically make a programme more suitable. Choose a schedule that fits your needs, health assessment, and available time.

How Do You Carry the Experience Into Everyday Life?

Integration means reflecting on an experience and exploring what it means in everyday life. Writing, quiet reflection, and conversations with an appropriately trained professional can support this process.

Turn Reflection Into Small Steps

If the experience brings your relationships into focus, a thoughtful conversation may be a useful next step. If you notice how little time you give yourself, consider a manageable change to your routine.

Let those steps develop gradually. You can value an experience without treating every impression as an instruction.

Keep Support Within Reach

Before leaving, clarify what follow-up your programme includes. If distress persists or affects everyday functioning, seek qualified mental health support.
